Requesting Access To Restricted Datasets

Understand why some datasets are restricted and how to send an effective access request.

Some datasets are published for discovery but cannot be downloaded freely because of licence or ownership restrictions.

The portal provides a direct request path to the dataset contact where that contact information is available.

Why A Dataset May Be Restricted

Restricted datasets are usually tied to licence conditions, ownership restrictions, privacy concerns, or controlled sharing agreements.

The portal reads this status from the dataset licence metadata and changes the action shown to the user.

How To Request Access

When a contact email is available, the Request Access action opens your email client with the dataset title and a pre-filled request template.

Steps

  1. 1Open the dataset page.
  2. 2Go to the Resources tab.
  3. 3Click Request Access.
  4. 4Fill in your name, organisation, and reason for request before sending.

What To Include In Your Request

Be specific about why you need the data and how you will use it. Vague requests are harder for dataset owners to approve.

Tips

  • State the project, report, or programme the data supports.
  • Explain whether you need raw files, summary data, or one-time access.
  • Mention any deadline if the request is time-sensitive.
